From Displacement to Determination

Displacement is often described through statistics: the number of families uprooted, the number of people living in camps, and the number of years spent away from home. Behind those figures, however, are individuals whose courage, leadership, and service cannot be measured by numbers alone. Lavia Mohammad Murad is one of those individuals.

A humanitarian activist, community worker, wife, and mother, Lavia has devoted years of her life to supporting displaced families and strengthening communities across refugee camps in the Kurdistan Region. Her journey from Rojava (Western Kurdistan) to the Kurdistan Region is a story not only of survival, but also of responsibility, service, and hope.

Lavia’s life was shaped by hardship from an early age. Before establishing a family of her own, she carried significant responsibilities within her household and became a dependable source of support for her parents. These early experiences developed the strength, discipline, and sense of duty that would later define her humanitarian work.

As conflict and instability spread across Rojava, Lavia was forced to leave her homeland and seek safety in the Kurdistan Region. Like many displaced people, she faced the painful reality of leaving behind familiar surroundings, personal memories, and the security of home. Beginning again in a refugee camp brought new responsibilities and uncertainties. Yet, displacement did not weaken her determination—instead, her personal experience gave her a deeper understanding of the difficulties confronting refugee families, particularly women, children, and young people.

After marriage, Lavia continued to carry her responsibilities with dedication. She worked to provide her husband and children with a stable and dignified home while remaining actively involved in the community. Balancing family life with humanitarian service was not always easy, but she continued to respond wherever assistance was needed.

Humanitarian Service in Refugee Camps

Lavia’s community work has reached residents of Domiz 1, Domiz 2, and other refugee camps in the Kurdistan Region. Her efforts have focused particularly on young people, many of whom face uncertainty about their education, employment, identity, and future.

• Youth Empowerment: Through guidance, community engagement, and practical assistance, she has worked to encourage young women and men to remain active, develop their abilities, and participate positively in society.
• Public Health Initiatives: Recognizing the health risks created by insects and inadequate sanitation in densely populated camps, Lavia helped initiate and supervise pest-control spraying campaigns.
• Preserving Dignity: These environmental health efforts directly contributed to cleaner surroundings and reduced potential threats to camp residents, protecting safety and dignity in everyday life.

Cooperation With International Organizations & Institutions

Throughout her professional and humanitarian journey, Lavia has worked with international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and institutions affiliated with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). These experiences allowed her to contribute to organized humanitarian programs while expanding her knowledge of community needs and institutional cooperation.

Her work has included participation in educational activities, training workshops, cultural festivals, social visits, and community programs. She has also attended academic and public events, including activities associated with the Ararat Institute.

Building Trust Across Diverse Communities

One of Lavia’s most significant achievements has been her ability to establish strong humanitarian relationships across different communities. Through years of service, she has gained the respect of camp residents, colleagues, neighbors, and members of the wider public.

Her work brought her into contact with refugees, local Kurdish residents, Arab citizens, humanitarian workers, and government representatives. By treating people with respect and responding to their needs without discrimination, she helped strengthen understanding among individuals from varied social and cultural backgrounds, acting as a vital bridge between residents and support institutions.
