Four Canadian Soldiers Killed in Alberta Training Fire
Four members of the Canadian Armed Forces died during a training exercise at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright on October 17, 2026. The fire began in the base’s training area and spread rapidly in strong winds. Thirty-nine other military members were injured. The cause is under investigation.
The soldiers were taking part in live-fire training with the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, as part of Exercise APOLLO SHOOTER. They were practising with live grenades and rehearsing an attack on a simulated enemy position—training intended to prepare troops for demanding military operations. CFB Wainwright is about 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton.
The four who died were Sgt. Morgan Wong, 26, of Edmonton; Pte. Shaun Farrell, 23, of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan; Pte. Aidan Goulding, 23, of North Vancouver, British Columbia; and Pte. Hayden Lykkemark, 19, of Langley, British Columbia. Wong served with the Loyal Edmonton Regiment and was serving with the battalion; the three privates were members of the battalion.
